There’s a small coral atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean called Diego Garcia. It’s a military base; US and UK; and the only people who set foot there are the ones the Navy sends. No tourists. No casual visitors. You don’t stumble across Diego Garcia. You get assigned there.

A woman reached out to us in 2024 wanting a bronze belt buckle for her husband’s 20th anniversary gift. The location she wanted on the buckle was Diego Garcia. The back would be engraved with the date: 9.21.2005.

“It’s a military only island in the Indian Ocean, where I met my husband 20 years ago.”

The Custom Map Belt Buckle Design Challenge

Diego Garcia is a thin strip of land, a narrow atoll that curves around a central lagoon. From above it looks like a footprint, or a comma, surrounded by the vast blue of the Indian Ocean. It’s striking on a satellite map. At belt buckle scale, engraved in bronze, it would be nearly invisible,  a tiny sliver of metal that could easily read as a scratch or an imperfection.

A standard map buckle crops the geography to fill the face, a river system, a coastline, a lake. Diego Garcia is surrounded by thousands of miles of open ocean in every direction. Crop to the island alone and you lose all context. Show the ocean and the island disappears.

So we came up with a different approach.

How We Solved It: A Magnifying Glass Design

We designed a world map composition centered on the Indian Ocean, with Southeast Asia to the right and the horn of Africa to the left. Diego Garcia sits in the center of the frame, but instead of trying to render it at full scale, we placed a magnifying glass over it, showing the island enlarged within the lens. A small heart marks the exact spot on the island where their story began.

The magnifying glass does two things at once. It solves the scale problem, the island is now readable, detailed, unmistakably itself. And it says something true about the place: you have to look for Diego Garcia. It doesn’t appear on most maps. Most people have never heard of it. It’s a place you only know about if you’ve been there.

We presented the design in two versions, positive and negative, the engraved areas light or dark, so she could see how the same composition reads in both treatments. The bronze version she chose has the warm, deep patina the metal develops naturally, the world map receding into the background and the magnifying glass drawing the eye to that small island in the middle of all that water.

The two design options we presented: positive and negative engravings of the same composition. The world map provides context. The magnifying glass zooms in on the island with a heart marking the exact location.

What Makes a Custom Map Belt Buckle Work

Every map buckle we make starts with a location. Sometimes it’s an address. Sometimes it’s a lake or a river or a stretch of coastline. Sometimes it’s a tiny island in the Indian Ocean that almost no one has heard of.

The location doesn’t have to be famous. It doesn’t have to be beautiful on a map. It just has to mean something to the person who’s going to wear it. That’s the whole idea: the geography of your life, in metal, on your belt.

We generate the map from real geographic data, crop it to work at buckle scale, and develop the design until it reads clearly and looks right in metal. If there’s a design challenge like  a location that’s too small, a geography that doesn’t crop well, a place that needs context to be understood, we solve it. That’s part of what we do.

The back engraving is included with every map buckle: a date, initials, a name, a short phrase, whatever belongs on the back of this particular piece. Leather belts are available to pair with any buckle if you want to give the complete set.

Custom Map Belt Buckles We've Made

A family farm in Tennessee where a couple got married. A lake in northern Canada that a group of friends fly into every year. A river system in the Pacific Northwest. A stretch of Canadian Shield that a CEO has fished for twenty years. A tiny military atoll in the Indian Ocean where two people met in 2005.

Every location is different. Every buckle is made once, for one person, from solid metal in our Seattle studio. No two map buckles from different locations will ever look the same.
